Celebrating Hawke's Bay's Primary Sector

SCP Client:

The Hawke's Bay A&P Society presents the Napier Port Hawke's Bay Primary Sector Awards, an annual celebration of Hawke's Bay's leading primary sector businesses and their people.

The event recognises excellence in the primary industries and rewards those that drive the local economy and help cement Hawke's Bay's position as a safe and sustainable food producer for the rest of the world.

Date, Time & Location:

As per previous years, the 2019 event on March 28, will be held at the Hawke's Bay Showgrounds, home of course to the Hawke's Bay A&P Society and the most appropriate location with the it being integral to Hawke's Bay's food production.

The Brief:

Having been the event photographers for the 2017 and 2018 events, SCP will be back to capture the Napier Port Hawke's Bay Primary Sector Awards on 28 March 2019.

With MCs such as Jesse Mulligan in 2017 and Jeremy Corbett in 2018, the events guarantee attendees will be entertained as well as informed about the great things growing here in Hawke's Bay.

Needless to say, SCP thoroughly enjoys shooting these events and to be honest, we struggle to call it work when we love what we're doing.

SCP's Solution:

As a wise photog once said, "ya cannae be in two places at the one time". So is the case with events of this size, two photographers are required to capture all the best shots. One photographer focuses on the action as award winners enter and exit the stage. The other photographer shoots the winners against a sponsor's wall once they've received their award.

SCP's two photographers arrive at the venue up to two hours before guests arrive to set up tripods, lights, softbox lighting modifiers and other cool photo stuff. This also leaves plenty of time to properly test the portable studio lighting used for the sponsor's wall.

Once everything is good to go, both shooters assume their positions in order to capture the arrival of the guests, nominees and the Bay's glitterati. They then mingle amongst the crowds, champagne and hors d'oeuvres, capturing casualness on the grassed area outside the venue as the pre-ceremony jitters of the nominees fade.

Shooting then continues as attendees enter the main marquee. Once guests are seated and the event begins, SCP captures the action in the room, on the stage and against the sponsor's wall.

The Final Cut:

At the end of the evening the second phase of work is just beginning for SCP's photographers as the raw shots enter post-production. Immediately after the event, each photographers’ camera memory cards are downloaded and backed-up, and within an hour or two the winner images are prepared and supplied to the client for media release the following day.

Then, in the coming days, high-resolution and web-ready images are enhanced, catalogued and uploaded to an online repository for client retrieval and subsequent use in print and press, and for digital purposes.

Simon's Say:

"SCP isn’t just a one-man-band, we often utilise the talents of other photographers within Hawke's Bay and our nationwide network, to assist us as needed and to ensure our clients always get the best imagery possible."
