Launched in 2012, Food and Wine Classic (F.A.W.C.) is Hawke's Bay's premier culinary festival, celebrating the region's rich food and wine heritage.

March 2025 saw Hawke’s Bay come alive with the vibrant energy of the Food and Wine Classic (F.A.W.C!), a festival that has firmly established itself as a cornerstone of New Zealand’s culinary calendar. Over ten days, the region played host to more than 30 events, each offering a unique blend of local flavours, international inspirations, and the unmistakable charm of Hawke’s Bay’s landscapes.

As a commercial and event photographer deeply embedded in the region’s food and wine scene, I had the privilege of capturing several standout events. Here’s a glimpse into the experiences that unfolded.

Knight of the Long Table, Bareknuckle BBQ

A grand celebration of smoky flavours and hearty fare, the Bareknuckle BBQ event brought together a vibrant community of barbecue enthusiasts for an unforgettable evening of indulgence. The air was thick with the rich and enticing aroma of slow-cooked meats, creating an atmosphere that was utterly irresistible.

BLENDED street event, Havelock North

BLENDED was a lively celebration of local wine, food, and art held in Havelock North village. Attendees experienced an exciting display from local artists, curated by Muse Art Gallery, and watched as Cinzah Merkins created a stunning live mural. Fine wines from local wineries were enjoyed, along with refreshing craft beer from Giant Brewing and delicious dishes offered by Piku and Fork & Noise.

Behind Porter’s Boutique Hotel, a pop-up garden bar provided a stylish space for guests to relax and enjoy. Malo featured a Raw Bar with fresh oysters and seafood, while Smith & Sheth had tasting stations set up throughout the courtyard. With live music enhancing the atmosphere, the day turned out to be truly memorable.

Salt & Smoke, Mangapapa

Before refrigerators, people utilised salting, brining, smoking, pickling, and preserving—common kitchen methods of the past. Mangapapa Hotel hosted a unique event that celebrated this 140-year-old heritage site. They enjoyed an exceptional dining experience inspired by traditional food preservation techniques.

Throughout the evening, they explored history with a four-course menu, each dish paired with perfect wines, focusing on local produce and honoring Mangapapa’s notable residents, Sir James and Lady Wattie. The event was not only a culinary journey but also a reflection on the importance of heritage and the ways our ancestors preserved food for future generations.

Great Wine Capitals, Mendoza Showcase, Black Barn

In celebration of Hawke’s Bay’s prestigious inclusion in the esteemed Great Wine Capitals Global Network, the spectacular Mendoza Showcase at the stunningly beautiful Black Barn Vineyards offered an exquisite and memorable taste of Argentina. Guests were treated to a thoughtfully curated and diverse selection of world-class Mendoza wines, expertly paired with a delightful variety of authentic Argentinian cuisine, effectively bridging continents through the shared excellence of viticulture and a rich culinary heritage that pays homage to the vibrant flavours of both regions.

Capturing these vibrant events was more than simply a professional endeavour; it was an invaluable opportunity to fully immerse myself in the rich stories, delightful flavours, and deep passions that collectively define Hawke’s Bay’s diverse culinary landscape. Each carefully composed photograph tells a compelling tale of collaboration, cherished tradition, and exciting innovation—a true testament to the region’s dynamic and ever-evolving food and wine scene.

Many thanks to the awesome team at Hawke’s Bay Tourism who do a sterling job of bringing this event together, and for inviting me to come along and document each event, much appreciated!
