How to Prepare for Your Next Headshot or Business Portrait
A headshot or business portrait isn’t just a photo, it’s the visual first impression you make in your professional world. Whether it’s LinkedIn, a company profile, or an event programme, the right preparation ensures your photo feels authentic, approachable, and confident.
Here are a few simple tips to help you look your best:
Clothing: Choose solid colours and well-fitted clothing. Bring a couple of options, both formal and relaxed.
Hair & grooming: Neat and natural is best. A haircut a week before is ideal, and if you wear glasses, wear them.
Makeup: Keep it natural and matte, so it photographs cleanly.
Rest & hydration: A good sleep and plenty of water make a big difference.
On the day: Arrive relaxed and trust the process—I’ll guide you through posing so it feels easy.
I’ve put together a Headshot Preparation Guide at the bottom of the page that covers these points in more detail, with practical advice on what to wear and how to get comfortable in front of the camera.

How to Look and Feel Your Best in Your Professional Headshot
Your headshot is often the first impression someone has of you, whether on LinkedIn, your website, in an event programme or before meeting them in person for the first time. A little preparation helps make sure the photo feels authentic, polished, and truly you.
What to Wear
Keep it simple: Solid colours photograph best. Avoid heavy patterns, stripes, or logos.
Choose colours that suit you: Blues, greys, and earthy tones are timeless.
Fit matters: Well-fitted clothing looks sharper than baggy layers.
Bring options: Two or three tops give variety. A mix of formal (blazer/shirt) and casual (smart knit/blouse) works well.
Layers add interest: Jackets, cardigans, or scarves can give you different looks.
Grooming & Personal Presentation
Hair: Tidy and natural. A haircut about a week before the shoot is ideal.
Glasses: If you wear them daily, wear them in your photos. Clean lenses beforehand.
Makeup: Keep it natural and close to how you normally present yourself. Matte products photograph best.
Facial hair: Neatly groomed or freshly shaved, go with what feels most “you.”
To Feel Relaxed & Natural
Get a good night’s sleep before your session.
Stay hydrated, it helps skin look fresh.
Avoid too much alcohol or salty food the night before.
Bring what makes you comfortable, your favourite jacket, or even a coffee between takes.
On the Day
Allow extra time so you’re not rushing.
Trust the process—Simon will guide you through posing and expression.
Aim for a friendly professional look: approachable but confident.
